Three forthright messages from Sunderland City Council will be displayed on digital advertising display boards across the city and on social media from Friday, July 3, with more enforcement activity and fines promised to deter offenders.

The council, whose ongoing crusade is backed by the Sunderland Echo’s own Clean Streets campaign, is unapologetic about its language.

"We want our city and neighbourhoods to be places that people are proud of and want to look after.

“But we've seen some horrific examples in recent weeks of litter being dumped on our beaches, strewn across our award winning parks and fly-tipped in rural locations and that's something that we're just not prepared to put up with.

"That's why we're committed to enforcing this through fines, with a zero tolerance approach to anyone caught littering or flytipping or not cleaning up after their dogs foul.

"We all have a responsibility to dispose of our rubbish legally - whether that's taking it home from the beach or making sure the company we hire to remove any waste is a licensed waste carrier.

"We know that the vast majority of our residents take a real pride in where they live and hate to see their neighbourhoods blighted by waste and litter so we're also asking for their help with making those responsible pay by continuing to report any flytipping, littering or dog fouling that they see.

"We can make Sunderland the clean, green attractive city we all want it to be but we need everyone to work together to make this happen."
