How to recycle your Christmas tree and where to take it in Sunderland

Everyone has their own rules on when the Christmas tree should be taken down. If you have a real tree this year here’s how you can recycle it in Sunderland.

Christmas trees can be recycled at the one of the following Household Waste and Recycling Centres:

Beach Street, Deptford, Sunderland,

It is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.

On Saturday and Sunday it is open from 8am to 6pm.

It is closed on New Years Day, Saturday, January 1, 2022.

Campground, Springwell Road, Gateshead, NE9 7XQ

Gateshead Council’s facility at Campground, Wrekenton is available for use by Sunderland residents.

The site is currently operating a booking system where you must choose a specific time. This can be done via this link.

The site is openMonday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

On Saturday and Sunday it is open from 9am to 6pm.

It is open every day except for Christmas Day.

How can I recycle my tree if I can’t get to a Household Waste and Recycling Centre?

Christmas trees can be put into your brown garden waste bin.

But these will not be collected until brown bin collections start again in March.

Alternatively book a bulky waste collection.

There is a £10 charge, but this price includes six items.

The service can be booked online via the Sunderland Council website.

You will be able to choose a date for collection once you have completed the request.

What do I need to do before recycling my tree?

Remove all tinsel and decorations and any pots or stands.

If you choose to put your tree in your brown bin, cut the tree to fit loosely inside the garden waste bin.
