Emergency services have been called to reports of a man in the water near the Northern Spire bridge in Sunderland.

Sunderland Coastguard, Seaham Coastguard and Sunderland RNLI were called to reports of a man in the River Wear at 2.30pm on Friday, October 30.

A coastguard spokesman said: “The casualty, who had entered the water from the river bank, self recovered shortly after our arrival with assistance from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

"He was taken into the care of the ambulance and police service.”
