Easington - Down Your Way

Easington C of E Primary School JRSOs (Junior Road Safety Officers) attended an end of year celebration at Durham County Hall. Ava Keegan, Alyssa Lawton, Poppy Watt, Matthew Flanagan and Charlie Hagel were recognised for all of their hard work throughout the year, which has involved making parents and children more aware of where to park around school and the importance of sticking to the speed limit. The children have carried out their role extremely sensibly and conscientiously, organising competitions and working alongside our local police officers. With the help of Councillor Surtees (our school governor), the children designed two fantastic banners focusing on road safety, which will be displayed outside of school from September. The event was a huge success and they are very proud of how the JRSOs represented the school.

A Rave for Bradley will be held in Easington Colliery Social Welfare Centre on Friday, August 26, with many groups and local MCs. Organisers want to thank all the artists who have agreed to help as without them this wouldn’t be happening. It is hoped to raise as much money as possible for young Bradley, who suffers from neuroblastoma. Tickets are price at £12.50.

A Brass Concert was held in Easington C of E Primary School and parents and family members were invited. Year 5 and 6 children learnt to play their brass instruments and were joined by Easington Academy Brass Band, who will accompanied the children and played some of its own pieces.

Students at Easington Academy suspended normal lessons and were offered the chance to try a wide range of activities. Events and activities took place outside and inside the school. There was tubing, kayaking, local walks, a visit to the seaside at Whitby and South Shields, a visit to Alnwick Castle and the very scenic Holy Island. For those who preferred to stay in school there was nail art, tie dying and a host of sporting activities.

Would you like to increase your general fitness? There is a gym at Healthworks where you can workout without that monthly/yearly fee. Just pay as you go at £2 per session. All you need to do is complete a eligibility form at reception (you may need permission by your GP if you’re under their care) and book your free induction. Whatever your shape or ability this is for you.

The Easington Community Garden was assessed today and the assessor and the man from Durham County Council were amazed at the amount of plants that had been grown and the different varieties. The Dennis Donnini Memorial Garden was also assessed and the assessor was very pleased with all the planting. She was impressed with the story of Dennis and how the community has honoured him and how the site was developed from a piece of contaminated waste land. Classification results will be known in November from the Northumbria in Bloom Assessor as part of It’s Your Neighbourhood Scheme.

A social evening will be held in the Church of Ascension hall with the North East’s newest singing star Louise Lou Lou Vasey on Friday, August 26, at 7pm. This girl has a fabulous voice so don’t miss it. There will be refreshments, bingo and raffle. Tickets are £4 from Roger Key.
