Easington Colliery Band members gave themselves a much-needed sight and sound spruce up, thanks to the generosity of the local community and charities. They have received a number of generous financial grant donations towards their aim of purchasing new instruments to replace their current ageing stock. Assistance from the North East Area Miners’ Social Welfare Trust Fund, Sir James Knott Trust, County Durham Community Foundation and the Hedley Foundation have enabled the band to recently purchase a set of four tubas, three tenor horns and two cornets. The band has also took delivery of new jackets and ties with help from Persimmon Homes and the Easington Colliery Parish Council, with a sizeable chunk of money raised by the local community at a recent fundraiser held at the Easington Colliery Social Welfare Centre, the former Miners’ Welfare.

St John’s Church, in Seaham, played host to So Percussion, which performed From Out A Darker Sea. A packed church saw the New York-based band members perform music inspired by their community. The piece of music was created for and inspired by the people of east Durham, and was commissioned by East Durham Creates and produced by Forma Arts. Nikki Locke, head of East Durham Creates, said: “I don’t think there was a single person here tonight who wasn’t moved by what they saw and heard. Tonight really showed the power of what the arts can do.”

His brother Eric, from Hove, East Sussex, knew how his brother enjoyed sitting there to meet up with friends. Easington Village Parish Council was delighted with the full cost of the benches which match their seating policy.
