Easington - Down Your Way

A National Trust walk will be held on November 8 from 1pm to 3.30pm. Wander along the beach from Easington to Limekiln Gill then back via the cliff top path. Look out for wildlife along the way including the rare Durham Argus butterfly. Booking is essential and this can be done through the National Trust's website, or by calling 01947 885 900. You can also email [email protected]/ Children and dogs on leads are welcome. Meet at Easington Colliery car park, SR8 3QW (free, not National Trust). Sturdy footwear is recommended. Some parts will be steep and uneven and paths might be muddy due to wet weather.

After last year’s success, Easington Colliery Heritage Group will again be jointly hosting a Christmas fair with Easington Colliery Social Welfare Centre. It will take place on Saturday, November 19, from 10am to 3pm, in the Welfare Centre hall. If anyone would like to book a table, please ‘inbox’ their Facebook page to make the arrangements.

Haswell and District Mencap, also known as the Lisa Dixon Centre, celebrated the official opening of its new furniture store, The FurniSHED. Thanks to a £50,000 investment from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust the old furniture shop in the former Haswell School, which was dilapidated, with a leaky roof, no heating and problems during the winter months it has been rebuilt. Jane Dixon, founded the charity 40 years ago, for people with learning disabilities after her daughter Lisa needed help. The furniture store is a great asset to the local community and makes a huge difference to the charity funds. Chief executive Hayley Hood, applied to the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, who had previously supported the centre. Durham County Council Chairman Councillor Edward Bell, local parish councillors, Coalfields Regeneration Trust chairman Peter McNestry, attended the official launch.

Hawthorn Parish Council Photographic Competition received quite a number of photos, which were displayed in the community centre. The winning entries were: Adult section Tommy Robinson; Under 16 years section Isobel Irwing. It is hoped to repeat the competition again next year.

A new eight-week free trial group, Social Snooker, starts at Easington Colliery Social Welfare Centre on Tuesday, November 8, from 2pm to 4pm. Open to all abilities, learn the rules, all equipment provided, fun environment and organised competitions. Easington C of E Primary School thanks those who supported its sponsored run. It raised an amazing £310 to put into the school fund support visits and to buy equipment for the children.
