Easington - Down Your Way

The launch of Eileen Hopper's third book will be held in Seaton Holme on Saturday at 11am. The event will be opened by Grahame Morris MP and there will be a display of old fashioned artifacts. This book covers the influence Seaton Holme, the former Rectory and Deanery of Easington, had on the surrounding countryside, the Rectors, the former Children's Home and Old Men's Hostel. It was then the headquarters of Easington Village Parish Council, a Discovery Centre, a community building and offices. The book is published by Summerhill Books and was financed by the parish council and the royalties from Eileen's last book.

Easington Village Women’s Institute is organising a coffee morning in Seaton Holme on Thursday from 10am to noon. Entrance, £2, will include refreshments, tombola, cake and craft stalls and proceeds will go to Mencap.

The Mothers’ Union Deanery meeting will be held in St Mary’s Church on Thursday at 1.30pm.

The Monday Club is hosting a popular Christmas flower demonstration with Val Guest Tuesday, November 29, at 7pm in St Mary’s Church hall. Entry is £5 at the door including refreshments. All are welcome.

Hawthorn Community Centre is holding a craft fair on Saturday from 10am to 2pm. There will be numerous stalls, refreshments and raffle.

To celebrate Year 11 success Easington Academy is inviting pupils and parents/carers to a presentation of gcse certificates evening on Thursday at 6.30pm. The evening will consist of the formal presentation of GCSE certificates followed by a guest speaker. Subject specific awards will also be presented to nominated students for outstanding progress, effort and attainment. Refreshments are after the presentation.

The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge set off on November 11 from Jedburgh, working its way down the East Coast finishing in London on November 18 in time for the BBC Children in Need Appeal Show. Day 2 members cycled 51 miles from Newcastle to Hartlepool, passing through Easington on the way. This was old territory for Matt Baker as he would pass Easington C of E Primary School where he spent his first school days.

Congratulations to Ben and Sandra Atherton on their ruby wedding and a massive thank you to them and their friends, who raised £1,200 in aid of the Easington Colliery Band at their celebrations at Easington Welfare Hall, where some of the players shared their big night with them. Sandra is now the band’s official No 1 supporter. Entertainment was by Hooch Navvarro and Lou,Lou and was outstanding Thanks to everyone who came.

St Mary’s Church has collected the boxes for the Children’s Society people keep in their homes to collect change over the year. The total was £885.27 with gift aid it will be more than £1,000.

As many of supporters are aware the Strayaid shop in Seaside Lane is in the process of closing its charity shop at Easington Colliery and moving to larger premises in Blackhall. It moved last weekend and hopes to open the new shop shortly.
