Durham Head Coach Jon Lewis leaves cricket club after 22 years of service

Lewis leaves the role after 22 years of service at the Riverside and will now look to pursue a new challenge either in the UK or overseas.

Durham have suffered a disappointing run of Championship results over the last two years have been particularly disappointing, amid financial difficulties.

Following relegation to County Championship Division Two in 2016, Durham finished second bottom last campaign.

The club has also undergone a coaching restucture which has effectively seen Lewis demoted.

After joining Durham from Essex in 1997, Lewis was appointed captain in 2000 and went on to in 146 first-class matches for the club.

He retired in 2006 and his total of 7,854 remains the third highest for the county.

Following his retirement, Lewis moved straight into coaching and helped develop the likes of Ben Stokes, Mark Wood, Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings as second XI coach.

Lewis was appointed first-team coach in 2013 before guiding Durham to their third Championship title.

He also won the Royal London One-Day Cup a year later and led the Durham Jets to their first T20 Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston in 2016.
