Durham Alliance Combination League: Wheatley Hill revel in second successive title triumph
Wheatley Hill WMC are celebrating a second successive title in fantastic fashion.
The defending champions only needed to avoid a heavy defeat in their final league game of the season against their sole challengers, West Auckland Tunns.
But they turned on the style to hand out a 5-2 defeat to their visitors to spark their championship celebrations.
Man of the match Lee Westgarth led the way with a well-taken double, with Kyle Middleton, Brett Carr and John Davies also on target.
Star man Steven Clough bagged a double for Tunns, who conclude their league season with a visit to Hall Farm Glasshus on Monday.
Hall Farm Glasshus outgunned the champions 3-0 on Monday night to cruise through to the Washington Aged Peoples Trophy final.
Adam Elliott was the Sunderland side’s star turn, with the goals coming courtesy of Lee Pearce (2) and Kyle Young.
Westgarth stood out in vain for Wheatley Hill.
Hall Farm will meet Horden Community Welfare in the final at Nissan on Wednesday (7.30pm kick-off).
Hall Farm will also be in final action next Saturday, at Nissan (3pm), when they will look to land the Mark Blake Memorial Trophy.
They will discover their opponents tomorrow, when Hylton Sports Club host Wheatley Hill WMC at the Billy Hardy Complex.
To finish the season, Hall Farm have another final, for the League Challenge Cup, when Horden Community Welfare will be the opponents at Nissan on Wednesday, May 23 (7.30pm).
