Dramatic pictures show car fire in Sunderland street as investigation is launched

An appeal has been launched asking any witnesses to come forward following the fire which broke out shortly before 5am.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and so far police officers have not ruled out a potential arson attack.

Pictures taken in the early hours show flames rising from the car as well as the devastating aftermath of the blaze.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “At 4.58am, we received a report of a car fire on Southwick Road. One crew from Sunderland Central attended and extinguished the fire.

“Deliberate fires put people at risk by placing unnecessary strain on our resources.

“We encourage anyone with information about deliberate fires to report it anonymously at www.firestoppersreport.co.uk or on 0800 169 5558.”

The fire brigade were also called to the same road at 1.47am. A crew from Marley Park attended but didn’t find anything.

The Peugoet 207 was ablaze off the main road near the Halfway House, police have confirmed.

A spokeswoman for the force said: “Shortly after 5am today (Monday), police received a report of a vehicle on fire on Southwick Road.

“It was reported that a Peugoet 207 was on fire just off the main road near the Halfway House.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“Anyone with any information should contact police using reference number 149 06/04/20.”
