Dog walker rescued by Coastguard after being cut off by tide

A walker and their dog had to be rescued by the Coastguard after they became stranded by the tide.

Sunderland and Seaham Coastguard Rescue Teams were called to help the pair, who had become cut off by the tide at Beacon Point, Easington Colliery, at around 11.40am on Saturday, August 1.

With the help of Sunderland RNLI inshore lifeboat, the rescue teams were able to reach the walker and dog and take them safely to Seaham Marina.

Coastguard rescue officers then gave further assistance and advice.

Sunderland Coastguard has issued a warning to the public to be aware of tide times when walking on beaches.

A Sunderland Coastguard spokesman said: “People walking on beaches, especially beneath cliffs, should always take steps to be aware of cut off points, identify escape routes and have knowledge of tide times.

"In all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
