Dog walker 'critical' after she was struck by car in Durham village

At 6.45pm yesterday the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was called to Front Street in Littletown, to the east of Durham, where the 40-year-old had been struck by a car while out walking a dog.

She had sustained severe head and abdominal injuries in the incident, which happened at around 6pm.

North East Ambulance Service staff were already on scene performing CPR when the GNAAS doctor and paramedic arrived in the charity’s rapid response vehicle.

The air ambulance service now carries blood on both its aircraft and road vehicles,and after anaesthetising the patient, the charity’s medical crew performed a transfusion on the roadside.

She was then taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where her condition was described as critical.

The air ambulance sent its road crew to the scene, as it was too dark to land.

The driver of the SAAB car involved is a man in his mid-30s from Peterlee.
