North East Ambulance Service staff were already on scene performing CPR when the GNAAS doctor and paramedic arrived in the charity’s rapid response vehicle.

The air ambulance service now carries blood on both its aircraft and road vehicles, and after anaesthetising the patient, the charity’s medical crew performed a transfusion on the roadside.

She was then taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, where her condition was described as critical.

The air ambulance sent its road crew to the scene, as it was too dark to land.
