Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and their colleagues based in Seaham were alerted to the call just before 9.30pm yesterday, Monday, August 24, after someone believed they had spotted the flare off the coast at Ryhope.

The officers checked the coast between Seaham and Hendon, but with further information to indicate any vessel having been in distress, both teams were stood down.
