David Moyes: Why I had doubts about taking Sunderland job and why I must trust Ellis Short

Moyes became the seventh manager in five seasons at the Stadium of Light when he replaced Sam Allardyce last month.

While Allardyce left to take over as England boss, Short has acquired a reputation for dispensing quickly with Sunderland managers, having fired Steve Bruce, Martin O'Neill, Paolo Di Canio and Gus Poyet since 2011, with Dick Advocaat having resigned.

Asked if the manager turnover had not put him off taking the job, Moyes said: "It's terrible, but it's terrible all over at the moment but at this club more so.

"The one good thing is that Ellis has wanted me on several occasions before so I'm putting a bit of trust in Ellis that he'll give me the time and opportunity to build it."

Moyes took over after disappointing spells at Manchester United and Real Sociedad, but hopes he can transform the club in a similar way that he did with Everton over a decade at Goodison Park.

"The time was right," he told Sky Sports. "I had several other offers to come back to the Premier League when I was in Spain and since then I've had a few other job offers as well but I never felt any of them really excited me to make me think I could make a difference there.

"Sunderland excites me because of the crowd, it excites me because of the size, the stadium, the training ground. It has a really good infrastructure. What doesn't excite me is that they've been bobbing along at the bottom for so long and that was the decision I had to make.

"I did genuinely look at the league position of this club and the league position of Everton when I took that job and there's a big similarity."

And the Scot says he feels there has been a 'panic mode' around the club in the past because of the manager uncertainty and struggles against relegation, something he wants to change.

"I don't know if every manager has come here in the same mode," Moyes added. "There's a panic mode when you come into Sunderland right away.

"You come in and say 'we have to sign this one, we have to sign that one' and I understand why the managers have done it.

"I'm trying to not have that feeling but obviously the season has started already, we have big games we want to win.

"I'm trying to do a little bit of both - I'm trying to get players in I need now but also a few for underneath. Ultimately we will see how it goes."
