David Moyes 'thrilled' as Sunderland move off bottom with 1-0 win over Watford

Patrick van Aanholt's third goal of the season four minutes into the second half was enough to give the Black Cats their third home win in the last four Stadium of Light fixtures.

They came under some heavy pressure from the Hornets but, seven days after sliding to a 3-0 defeat at Swansea, they held firm, Jordan Pickford, not for the first time, doing some good work late on.

A classic it was not, Moyes was even joking to the assembled media at his post-match press conference that he was going to hand out a DVD of the game as a present!

But he was delighted with the outcome.

"I'm thrilled to get the win," said the Sunderland boss.

"It was really important for the players and the club to stay in touch.

"There were bits not as nice as I'd like them but there was a lot of resilience.

"We had some good bits in attack, but not enough, we had some good defending and some not so good.

"Overall, I was thrilled we got three important points."

Moyes was happy with the way his players put their bodies on the line for the cause, especially when they came under the cosh from corners and free-kicks.

Pickford saved superbly from Nordin Amrabat's volley from a first-half corner while Miguel Britos headed wide when it looked easier to score.

The home-grown keeper saved froim Odion Ighalo late on having been able to watch a Troy Deeney header go wide.

"We were probably lucky not to be a goal down, the boy missed a very good chance," added Moyes.

"We gave away too many stupid free-kicks just outside the box and conceded a lot of corners.

"We brought on John O'Shea late on to see it out and we showed good steel, the lads stuck at it."
