Only Jermain Defoe (eight), Victor Anichebe (three) and van Aanholt (three) have scored in the Premier League this season.

Moyes describes that as a “massive” problem and he has tasked the other outfield players to start taking on more of the goalscoring responsibility.

The Dutch left-back scored the only goal of the game in Saturday’s victory over Watford at the Stadium of Light, a result which sees the Black Cats climb to third-bottom and a point from safety.

No defender has scored more Premier League goals since the start of last season than the 26-year-old, who has netted seven in total.

“It’s a really good record,” said Moyes.

“He’s very good at getting forward. Sometimes his last pass isn’t that good, but he comes up with a goal.

“He ends up in some weird positions sometimes for a left-back and you might even argue against Watford, how did he end up in the middle of the six-yard box to finish it off,?

“but thank goodness he did because it was really important for us.”

When the lack of league goals from elsewhere in the team was pointed out, Moyes added: “Is that right?

“In the league this season?

“It is a massive problem that, because you need to share the goals around the team.

“We need to get more goals.

“I didn’t actually know that, but I’ll be telling them that. They’re in for it now!”
