While there was criticism of new signing Jan Kirchhoff and manager Sam Allardyce, there was a lot of praise too for Jordan Pickford on his Premier League debut and the much-improved Patrick van Aanholt.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the game at White Hart Lane:

John Bexley @JohnBexley: You can sort of forgive a bit of Kirchhoff rustiness. But I didn't think he looked vaguely interested.

Chris Wiley @ChrisWiley1991: Absolute headless chicken! No confidence or coordination

christinesmith @cs10mackem: On a bright note he can't get worse! Can he ?

John Taylor @johntaylor2348: I think he needs time don't get me wrong bad decisions and lack of game time but gotta put it behind us and beat Bournemouth

Anth @1973anth03: Mirror image of the Arsenal match this, looking decent at 1-1 and big Sam gets his subs wrong and it's 3-1.

Fezz @FezzaSAFC: Billy Jones takes so long to take throw ins it's like he's buffering #SAFC

Michael Potts @potts93: Watch Jack Rodwell. Just watch him for a minute or so, nobody else. We paid £10 million for that man. 10. Million. Pounds.

Stephen Goldsmith @goldys_logic: Fascinated to hear Sam's reasoning for changing the system in a game #SAFC weren't chasing.

Leon Callander @LeonCallander94: Unfair on Pickford he has had an unreal game anarl, nowt he could do about all 4 goals #SAFC

Michael Graham @Capt_Fishpaste: Fair few people had 'mares here for #SAFC, not least Sam Allardyce, but PVA and Pickford have been superb.

Simon @RokerToTheLight: Only positive out of that was @JPickford1 kept the scoreline down with some cracking saves. My #safc man of the match with out a doubt.

Lewie Laing @LewieLaing: Pickford absolutely quality today, goals weren't his fault. Made some quality saves. Keep him in against Bournemouth! #SAFC

Jamie Foster @jamiefoster97: If you'd have said to me 4-2 win at Swansea and a hammering off Spurs I'd have taken it at the start of the week! #safc

And the Sunderland stopper took to Twitter himself on a proud day for the 21-year-old.

Jordan Pickford @JPickford1: Another proud moment for myself and my family making my premier league debut for the team I've always supported !! @SunderlandAFC #sendit
