Arren Warrender, 21, of Briar Lea, Shiney Row, punched and slapped her and also bit the back of her neck while pressing her face to the floor.

His attacks, on Saturday, April 11 and the following day, left her bruised and suffering blurred vision that led to frequent vomiting.

Prosecutor Marc Atkins said: “On April 10 the complainant had returned home after being out and went to bed.

“The defendant started an argument with her about how little attention he felt she gave him.

“She went to sleep but the next day she was in the kitchen and he returned to the argument from the night before.

“Her memory of what happened is limited but she recalls being face down on the floor.

“The defendant was on top and he had her hair in both hands and was banging her head on the floor.

“This caused bruising to her head and she suffered blurred vision and was frequently vomiting.

“The complainant, when the defendant was still on top, felt him bite down on the back of her neck.”

Mr Atkins said Warrender then pulled her down onto the staircase, adding: “He punched the complainant about three or four times to her arms.

“She left the property and went to a friend’s house.

“She returned and things were fairly normal, they got in the car and went for a drive.

“The complainant then got changed to go to a friend’s house, but the defendant started to argue with her.

“On this occasion he hit her and banged the back of her head.

“She turned to face him, and he slapped her across the side of her face which caused a black eye and bleeding.”

The next day college apprentice Warrender apologised but then turned nasty.

Mr Atkins added: “He became aggressive and threatened to stab her and set fire to her house.

“He hit her with the back of his hand, causing a burst lip and pain to her nose.”

Joanne Gatens, defending, urged magistrates not to jail Warrender, insisting he could work on his anger issues with professional support.

She added: “I’m not going to minimise or mitigate, these are serious offences. He is very remorseful, and it is genuine remorse.

“He does acknowledge that the red mist does come down.”

Warrender had pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault by beating and one of assault causing actual bodily harm but changed his plea on the day of his trial.

He was jailed for 23 weeks for causing actual bodily harm and 12 weeks for each of the assaults by beating, to run concurrently.
