Victim in hospital with 'serious head injuries' following attack with hammer in Sunderland

Northumbria Police has launched an investigation after a man was assaulted in the Grindon area of the Saturday at around 7.40pm on Saturday, September 5.
The 24-year-old victim was walking from Thorney Close across Barnes Burn in the direction of Grindon Broadway Social Club when he was approached by two other men on the footpath.

Hide AdHe was then attacked by the two offenders, who were believed to be in possession of a hammer.
The victim managed to make his way home before ringing an ambulance. He was then taken to hospital where he remains with serious and potentially life-changing head injuries.
Detective Constable Jodie Faulkner, who is leading the investigation, said: “This was a very serious assault that has left the victim with significant head injuries that he may never fully recover from.
“This type of attack is absolutely appalling and will not be tolerated in our community. We are now doing all we can to identify the attackers and make sure they are ultimately brought to justice.

Hide Ad“I am now appealing to residents who live in that area, who may have seen two men running from the area between 7.40pm and 8pm, to get in touch.
"We’d also ask anybody with CCTV to check between those times and give us a call if you notice anything suspicious.”
The attackers are believed to be in their mid-20s.
