Two charged following crash which left delivery man seriously injured in hospital

Northumbria Police has charged two men with robbery following an investigation into a crash which left a delivery driver fighting for his life.

Houghton men Anthony Newell, 31, and Adam Gray, 27, appeared before magistrates in Newcastle on Saturday, December 21 following an incident in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, on Monday, December 16.

At 2.45pm that day, officers received a report of a collision involving a man and a Citroen Berlingo on Derwentwater Road.

It was reported that a delivery driver, who is believed to have been delivering parcels in the street, had been struck by the vehicle, prompting an investigation by Northumbria Police.

On Saturday, his condition was described as stable by the force.

Newell, of Sunderland Street, and Gray, of Mill Terrace, both Houghton, have been jointly charged with robbery while Newell has also been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The men have been remanded in custody and will appear before Newcastle Crown Court in due course, police said in a statement on Saturday.

Officers are continuing their inquiries into the incident and are calling for any members of the public who noticed any suspicious activity in the area at the time to get in touch.
