Two arrests made in connection with Newbottle rape as detectives continue investigation

Detectives investigating a rape in Newbottle have arrested two men in connection with the incident – and one remains a person of interest.

A masked man raped a woman at her home address in Newbottle during an appalling attack at around 10.30pm on Monday, July 27 .

A white male, who was unknown to the victim, is believed to have fled the scene wearing a dark face mask and dark hoodie immediately after the sexual assault.

Detectives say two men have now been arrested in connection with the incident since the start of the investigation.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and questioned and has been released under investigation – but Northumbria Police say he remains a person if interest.

A 36-year-old man was also arrested but has since been released with no further action.

Detectives say they are treating the rape report as a random attack but have confirmed there have been no similar reports made in the area nor is there any evidence to suggest the offender will strike again.

The victim is being supported by specialist officers after immediately reporting the sexual assault to police following the attack on Monday, July 27.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with any information about any males in the area that evening or who have suspicions about any males to contact police.

Northumbria Police has thanked all the people who have come forward and say no detail is too small.
