Three suspects have been arrested after targeted investment fraud strikes in Sunderland.

The suspected fraudsters, all men, aged 34, 36 and 65, have been arrested as part of a continued clampdown around investment fraud.

Early this morning (November 26), officers from the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU), carried out strikes on addresses on Weardale Avenue, Cairns Road and Moor Lane, Whitburn.

The targeted police operation saw an early morning wake-up call for the suspected fraudsters who are believed to be linked to a wide-scale investment and business scam operation across the UK.

Searches of the properties resulted in the discovery of quantities of cash and high value watches.

Those arrested currently remain in police custody while enquiries continue.

NEROCU Detective Sergeant Andrea Smith, part of NEROCU’s Regional Economic Crime Unit, said: “This action has been the result of months of planning and intelligence gathering and demonstrates our commitment to pursuing fraud suspects.

“As always we will continue our efforts under Operation Sentinel – our regional approach to disrupting and tackling Serious and Organised Crime here in the North East.”

DS Smith added: “We urge anyone looking to invest their money to take time to carry out research and ensure it is legitimate. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is – be cautious and never invest more than you’re willing to lose.

“If you have concerns or think you are a victim of fraud, report it to police or Action Fraud immediately.”

Anyone who has any information about criminal activity, can report it to their local police by calling 101 or via the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
