Tesco Express worker assaulted and has mobile phone stolen by two shoplifters in Sunderland

Police have launched an investigation into reports a Tesco Express worker was assaulted by two shoplifters.

Officers were called to the Tesco Express Petrol Station on Silksworth Road at around 9.10pm on Tuesday, April 27 after it was reported that a staff member had been assaulted by two shoplifters.

He chased them out of the store and attempted to take pictures using his phone when he was then assaulted and had his mobile stolen.

The offenders had already fled the scene in a vehicle driven by a third male when officers arrived.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At about 9.10pm on Tuesday (April 27) police received a report that a staff member at the Tesco Express Petrol Station had been assaulted by two shoplifters.

“It was reported that the staff member had challenged two males who had entered the store and made off with a number of items without payment.

"The staff member chased them out of the store and removed his phone to take pictures of the males.

"He was then assaulted and the thieves stole his mobile phone. Thankfully he was not seriously injured.

"Officers attended the scene but those responsible had already fled the area in a vehicle driven by a third male.
