The 35-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of burglary and now Northumbria Police wants to praise the vigilance of the resident who contacted them.

“This was a great bit of teamwork between the person who contacted police and those officers who attended the scene,” said Chief Inspector Paul Walters.

“We were surprised to find the suspect with their hand in the property and she was immediately arrested so we could carry out enquiries.

“During the arrest we were able to seize a number of items that we believe to have been stolen and so this is a really fantastic result.

“I do want to take this opportunity to remind residents to ensure their properties are secure as opportunistic thieves will continue to operate despite the lockdown restrictions.

“Please make sure your doors and windows are locked, even if you are inside, as it could prevent you from falling victim to crime.

“This case is also an important reminder to contact us if you see anyone acting suspiciously as it could help us make a quick arrest and secure vital evidence.”
