After she broke free and fled to the safety of security staff, Hobson, now of Norfolk Street, in Sunderland city centre, kicked a door.

His actions shattered glass and he also damaged a window, leaving the university with a £500 repair bill, magistrates in South Tyneside heard.

Hobson’s anger spilled out in response to issues around his ex-partner and her new boyfriend granting him access to his child.

Magistrates have now ordered him to stay away from his victim for the next two years under the terms of a restraining order.

Prosecutor Leanne Duffy told the court: “The victim was in a relationship with the defendant for three months.

“She went to the defendant’s address on campus, and she could tell that he was in a mood.

“He threw a bucket which hit her on the leg, and she went to the door, but he pulled her back.

“She got outside but the defendant pushed her, and her head hit off the gate. A security guard called the police.

“The defendant kicked a door and caused it to shatter, and he damaged a window.”

In a victim statement read to the court, the woman said: “This incident has left me petrified. I didn’t know what was going to happen next.”

Amy Hossack, defending, said: “This was a man that was going through some difficult times. He was being denied access to his daughter.

“He was really struggling to get access to his young child and was upset about her well-being.”

Hobson, who has four previous convictions, including one of assault and two against property, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and causing criminal damage.

Magistrates sentenced him to an 18-month community order, with a requirement of 25 days of rehabilitation work with the Probation Service.

Hobson must also pay the university £500 in compensation, and was fined £50.
