South Tyneside Magistrate’s Court heard how a Houghton-le-Spring man got heated in police station cells when officers ordered him to remove a blanket from his head.

Karl Bown, 29, stood up and pushed into a female officer as he tried to barge his way out of custody at Sunderland’s Southwick Police Station.

Bown, of Barnwell View, then put his hands on a male officer’s neck as he continued his reckless manoeuvre on Saturday, November 30.

Neither officer suffered injury and the PC’s breathing was not impaired, prosecutor Gurjot Kaur said.

At South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, Ms Kaur added: “The defendant was arrested on an unrelated matter.

“In custody, he had a blanket over his head and a female detention officer asked him to remove it. He pushed into her.

“There is CCTV of his hand going around the other officer’s neck which did not affect his breathing.”

Bown pleaded guilty to charges of committing actual bodily harm and assault of an emergency worker by beating.

Robin Ford, defending, said: “He hasn’t been convicted of any offence since 2022.”

District Judge Zoe Passfield adjourned the case for reports and granted Bown unconditional bail to be sentenced at the same court on Thursday, February 13.

She told him: “I will give you credit for these guilty pleas, but we need a pre-sentence report before we proceed to sentence.:”
