Sunderland man dies after being hit by minibus in Leeds

A man who died after being hit by a minibus in Burmantofts, Leeds, has been named by police.

Sunderland man Colin Penman, aged 44, was killed after being hit by a a silver Ford Tourneo minibus while walking on Beckett Street on Friday, May 28.

It happened at around 12.30am.

Mr Penman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Dalsooz Hussain, 49, from Leeds ,appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court on Monday May 31 charged with causing death by careless driving and causing death whilst driving a motor vehicle unlicenced and uninsured.

He was remanded in custody at the hearing.

He will next appear before Leeds Crown Court on June 28.

A police vehicle had stopped at the scene immediately prior to the crash occurring.

A referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the presence of officers.

The IOPC has declared an independent investigation in relation to the incident which will run parallel to the West Yorkshire Police criminal investigation.

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy of the Major Collision and Enquiry Team, said: “We are continuing to investigate this collision which tragically resulted in the death of Mr Penman and are appealing for further witnesses to come forwards.

“I am particularly keen to speak with the drivers of cars caught on CCTV at the scene of the collision at around the time it occurred.”
