Sunderland man charged with drink driving after car crashes into bus stop

A man has been charged with drink driving after a car crashed into a bus stop on a busy Sunderland road.

A short time later, it received a report a car had crashed on the B1405 Springwell Road and arrived to find a Renault Clio had collided with a bus stop and its pole outside Springwell Medical Centre.

The impact also left the front of the car severely damaged.

The road was closed for short time while Sunderland City Council workers cleared the debris and the vehicle was recovered.

The car’s driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Police have now confirmed they have now charged a 49-year-old from the Penshaw area with driving a motor vehicle when above the legal alcohol limit.

He is to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court Friday, on August 13.
