Sunderland man appears in court charged with causing death of retired nurse in collision

A Sunderland man accused of causing the death of a retired nurse by careless driving has appeared in court.

Jean Hardy, 71, died after she was hit by a car when she crossed Doxford Park Way, Doxford Park, Sunderland, on Tuesday, February 4 last year.

Grant Williamson, 26, of Askrigg Avenue, Grangetown, Sunderland, has appeared at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court charged in connection with her death.

Members of Mrs Hardy’s family were in court for the hearing where Williamson pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction and sent Williamson’s case to be heard at Newcastle Crown Court.

He was granted unconditional bail in the meantime to appear for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, May 11.

Following her death, Echo readers paid tribute to Jean, described as a ‘lovely lady’, who died days after being seriously hurt in the collision.
