Prosecutor Andrew Walker told the court: "She was terrified by what he had said to her.

"Shortly thereafter she heard a knock at the door Eventually she looked out of the window, at which point she saw the defendant walking away from her property.

"That is a breach of the restraining order."

Mr Walker added: "She was fearful to the point she backed her bags and took herself and her daughter to her sister's address for the rest of the night."

Hughes, of Kepier Crescent, Durham, admitted making a threat to kill and breach of a restraining order.

Mr Recorder James Wood QC sentenced him to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, with programme and rehabilitation requirements plus a four month night time curfew.

The judge told him: "You behaved disgracefully, your conduct presents a danger to women.

"I suspend the sentence in the hope you will start to grow up, to realise you can't treat people in the way you have been treating her and the only thing that will happen if you continue to treat people like that is you will immediately go to prison."

The judge issued a five-year restraining order.
