A Sunderland councillor has appeared in court, accused of allowing youngsters to use a quad bike without insurance.

City Council Silksworth ward member Phil Tye appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates.

Coun Tye, of Castlereagh Street, Silksworth, is charged with permitting multiple persons of age 16 and under to use a motor vehicle at the King George Playing Fields, in Palgrove Road, Pennywell, on Friday, October 22, last year.

Coun Tye, 45, did not enter any plea and the case was adjourned to Tuesday, June 22.
