Shopworker threatened with gun as armed robbers steal cash and cigarettes

A shopworker was threatened with a firearm by men as they raided a Sunderland store for money and cigarettes.

Clinton Stores, in Clinton Place in East Herrington, was targeted last night, Wednesday, June 10, two hours before it was due to close.

Police are today continuing efforts to track down the two thugs who threatened a member of shop staff with a firearm as they stole £200 in cash and £200 worth of cigarettes.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 7pm yesterday, we were called to Clinton Stores in East Herrington, Sunderland following a report of an armed robbery.

“It was reported that two men had entered the shop and a staff member was threatened with what is believed to be a firearm before the pair made off with £200 in cash from the till and nearly £200 worth of cigarettes.

“No one was injured.

“They left the store on foot, heading towards Silksworth Road.

“Officers are carrying out door-to-door inquires and reviewing CCTV.”

Descriptions of the men have been issued as officers appeal for help to trace the thieves.

The first is in his early 20s and wore a padded black jacket, black cap with a hood up and carried a backpack with a monkey motif.

The second is described as shorter, slim, wore a Puffa-style black jacket, black trainers and a face covering.

Any witnesses or anyone who can help the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting log 865 100620.
