Seven people have been arrested and a haul of vehicles and weapons seized after a police crackdown on antisocial behaviour in Sunderland.

On Friday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 16 officers carried out early morning raids at properties across Sunderland, South Tyneside and parts of Durham.

The raids were conducted following reports of large-scale disorder in the Claxheugh Rock area on Sunday, May 7.

It was reported that a group of around 100 people on off-road motorcycles were in the area. When police arrived some began throwing missiles, damaging three police vehicles. No officers were injured.

The riders then made off on quads and off-road bikes. An investigation was launched and seven males aged 18-45 were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder in connection. All seven arrested have since been released on police bail as enquiries continue.

During the searches officers also seized several items including a car, motorcycle and clothing, as well as several weapons including a machete and extendable baton.

The crackdown was supported by Sunderland City Council.

Cllr Claire Rowntree, deputy council leader, said: “I am pleased our Neighbourhood Enforcement Team has been able to play its part in helping to identify those believed to be responsible for this disorder.

“Our communities have every right to expect to be able to get on with their lives in peace without having to put up with this kind of anti-social behaviour.”

DCI Rob Bosson led on the crackdown and has praised officers and partners involved.

He said: “We had some brilliant results following our two days of action in the past week, which has seen dedication from everyone involved.

“An investigation was immediately launched following the large-scale disorder and seven males have since been arrested as part of our ongoing enquiries.

“Some of the people arrested are believed to have been causing significant issues for the local community, and caused significant alarm on Sunday, May 7.

“They are now facing potential criminal charges for their actions. A number of other individuals were interviewed under caution.”
