Second man in custody over Sunderland street assault which left victim with life-threatening injuries

Northumbria Police has made a second arrest in relation to an assault in Sunderland, which left a man with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to the city’s Borough Road on Saturday, August 1 at around 4pm to reports of an assault.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police confirmed that the injured man remains in a critical condition in hospital on Monday, August 3.

As previously reported, officers arrested a 31-year-old man on suspicion of assault in the aftermath of the incident.

On Monday, the force confirmed that a 29-year-old man has also been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A spokesman added: “Both remain in police custody.”
