Search goes on to trace hammer-wielding robbers who struck at Sunderland shop

Detectives are still working to trace three hi-vis wearing robbers who threatened shop staff with hammers during a robbery.

The raiders threatened a woman working at the shop, which is opposite the Toyota dealership, with all three running off towards Crozier Street once they had stolen cash and other items.

The worker was taken to hospital as a precaution after the ordeal left her shaken.

Northumbria Police have said the thieves were all dressed in hi-vis clothing, with two wearing yellow jackets and the third in an orange jacket and dark bottoms.

All were wearing masks and gloves.

Inquiries are continuing into the incident, which happened at 1.35pm.

Detective Constable Kelly Scott, of Northumbria Police, said the attack has been an “appaling incident” which targeted a popular convenience store in the middle of the day, with her team using “every tactic” to find the thugs responsible.

She added: “They showed a total disregard for the welfare of staff and families who rely on the store during these difficult times.”

The force has appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area or has information which can help them trace the attackers to get in touch.

Det Con Scott said: “Your information, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, could prove the key to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.”

The shop has told its Facebook followers it will be back open from 8am on Saturday, November 21, and have thanked their customers for the kind messages since the incident.

They have asked shoppers to be mindful of the impact of it on the team and the ongoing investigation into the “horrific” ordeal as they look to move on from what happened.

A GoFundMe page set up to help the business by a customer has since been closed.
