No details of the accident were revealed during the 10-minute hearing at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

However, magistrates were told the case was so serious it could only be dealt with at crown court.

They sent the case to be heard at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday, June 3, and granted Thompson unconditional bail.

The collision happened three miles south of the A690 Durham Road junction.

A pre-inquest hearing into Mr Jordan’s death was opened and adjourned in March.
