The incident took place over the bank holiday weekend, and was reported to Northumbria Police on Tuesday, May 26.
A force spokesman said on Wednesday, May 27: “Yesterday we received a report that scaffolding had been stolen from the Salvation Army base on Cairo Street, Sunderland, over the weekend.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website quoting log 578 260520.”
As news of the incident was posted on the Sunderland Citadel Salvation Army Facebook group, members of the public hit out at those responsible.
It was reported on the public page that work was due to happen at the building, but cannot now go ahead without the scaffolding.
