A number of cars and vans – including one from Northumbria Police’s specialist search team – could be seen in Emsworth Road, Carley Hill this evening, Tuesday, July 13.

Several uniformed officers are also in attendance.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said officers had been at the scene since last night: “I looked out of the window and there were just loads of police cars and police vans,” she said.

"There were armed police everywhere. That would be around 7pm.”

Officers had eventually forced their way into a building: “They kept shouting that they were outside but there was no answer,” she said.

"I think they drilled the locks out.”

Police had remained at the scene since, she added: “They have been there all day and I think they were there all night.”
