John Farrow had sex with his victim, who had been drinking, without her consent and believed she would be too embarrassed to tell anybody about her shocking ordeal.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the 33-year-old rapist had been "willing to have intercourse with anyone not in a fit state to deter it."

Farrow eventually stopped his attack when the woman ordered him to.

The court heard the "robust and resilient" victim, who suffered painful injury in the attack, reported her ordeal to the police and he was put on trial.

Farrow, of Bruce Kirkcup Road, Horden, who denied the charge against him, was convicted of rape by a jury.

He has now been jailed for eight years and 10 months and must sign the sex offenders register for life.

Judge Sarah Mallett said: "It is right to say this will be your first custodial sentence.

"You raped her.

"You got off when you were told to."

The judge said Farrow had been "willing to have intercourse with anyone not in a fit state to deter it".

Judge Mallett told him: "You never have admitted to what you did."

The judge told Farrow he had showed a "lack of remorse or any understanding of how wrong your behaviour was”.

She also praised Farrow's victim for her "robust and resilient" character.

Judge Mallett added: "The offences are all so serious only a custodial sentence can be justified."

Jane Waugh, defending, said: "He has previous convictions, but nothing that has resulted in a custodial sentence."
