A warning has been issued by police after a number of fake £50 and Scottish £20 notes have been used in the Peterlee area.

Police officers are warning the public pay ‘close attention’ following reports of the fake notes that are currently in circulation.

A spokesman for Peterlee Police said: “Today we have received some fake bank notes, the notes in question are £50 notes and fake £20 Scottish notes and they are in circulation in and around Peterlee.

“Please pay close attention when receiving these notes. If you have any concerns then please get in touch.”

The warning is accompanied by pictures of the fake notes.

Action Fraud issues advice on counterfeit notes.

Head of Action Fraud, Pauline Smith said: “Criminals are using increasingly sophisticated networks and methods to make counterfeit notes and coins.

“If you have been passed or recover counterfeit currency, this should be reported to your local police force.”
