Officers say that they were contacted by a member of the public who wanted to raise concerns about a male driver who had asked her if she needed a lift in Fulwell.

Police have revealed that since the report was made, comments have surfaced on social media that the man was attempting to abduct the woman in question.

It is understood that the driver has visited a police station after seeing the social media posts and was “horrified” by the idea that had had any malicious intent towards the lady.

Officers dealing with the report have reminded members of the public to be mindful when posting on social media.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "We were contacted by a member of the public who wanted to raise concern about a male driver, who had asked her if she needed a lift in Fulwell.

“Since the report, comments have been made on social media that the driver was trying to abduct the female in question.

“There is absolutely no evidence to suggest this was the case and this is not being treated as an attempted abduction.

“We are satisfied he was making an offer of a lift in good faith and we would ask the public to be mindful when making comments on social media."
