Police probe continues after armed man spotted in Sunderland woodland

Inquiries are continuing today after an armed police operation was launched following fears someone with a weapon was hiding in a Sunderland wood.

Northumbria Police sent officers to carry out a sweep of an area of land off Silksworth Lane after a report claiming a man with a weapon had been seen yesterday, Wednesday, April 8.

Today, the force confirmed inquiries are ongoing into the claim.

Police said officers had received a report at 10.49am from a concerned caller who believed they had spotted a man with a weapon in the woods.

The area opposite The Cavalier, near Silksworth Close, was checked, but the teams were stood down shortly after 1pm.

A spokesperson added: “There have been no further sightings of the man.
