The Black Cats head to the Riverside on Monday, September 5, and police and Middlesbrough FC say they are working together to welcome the large crowd and encourage supporters to enjoy what the town has to offer.

Police say they recognise the majority of fans will be attending the game without the intention of causing any trouble, but officers will be on hand to deal with any incidents of disorder.

Superintendent Dave Sutherland said: “We have been working closely with Middlesbrough FC to have plans in place to try to ensure that those attending the game and visiting Middlesbrough have a safe and enjoyable evening.

“Football can generate strong emotions and a small minority of people use this an excuse to get involved in disorder and criminality.

"Genuine fans may be concerned but we can reassure them that police will deal robustly with those involved in these types of incidents, including making use of football banning orders.

“We would encourage anyone who is travelling to the game to check parking and travel information and plan their route in advance. Updates can be found on the Middlesbrough FC social media pages and Middlesbrough Council website.”
