A person has been pronounced dead after emergency services were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks near a Metro station.

British Transport Police were called to the Metro line near Fellgate station on the South Hylton to Airport line at 2.51pm today, Tuesday, March, 16 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers say they are now working to identify the person and inform their next of kin.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

A BTP spokesperson said: “British Transport Police were called to the line near Fellgate Metro station at 2.51pm today (16 March) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

“This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
