Two men have been charged with murder after a 55-year-old man was found with serious injuries in Penshaw.

Northumbria Police has now named the 55-year-old victim as Sean Mason, of Penshaw, who sadly died after being found seriously injured following an incident on Avondale Avenue shortly after 3am on Saturday, May 16.

Two men have today (May 19) been charged with his murder and an 18-year-old woman has now been arrested in connection with the incident.

Steven Milroy, 47, of Avondale Avenue and Wayne Froud, 36, of Wensleydale Avenue, are due to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ court tomorrow, (Wednesday, May 20).

An 18-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the incident yesterday (Monday) and remains in police custody at this time.

A third male, aged 38, who was arrested shortly after the incident has been released without charge.

Officers were first called to an incident on Avondale Avenue shortly after 3am, where they discovered Mr Mason had been seriously injured.

The 55-year-old was taken to hospital but sadly died as a result of his injuries a short time after.

Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Chatterton said: “This is an incredibly difficult time for the family of Sean Mason and they are being supported by specialist officers. We ask you respect their privacy at this time as they come to terms with their loss.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we would urge anyone with information to get in touch as soon as possible.”

A large police cordon was in place on Avondale Avenue, in Penshaw, as the investigation into the man’s death got under way throughout Sunday, May 16.

Bins at the scene were sealed up with police tape and a forensic team was also at another address in Coxgreen Road, which police confirmed was in connection with the enquiry.
