Demi Young’s slow and erratic driving led them to pull her over in her 2013-plate BMW just yards away in Vine Place on Sunday, November 17 last year.

Young, 28, of Wycliffe Road, Barnes Park, Sunderland, gave a roadside breath test reading that showed she was almost one-and-a-half times the limit.

Prosecutor Grace Taylor told South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court: “Officers were on duty in the city centre.

“They saw the defendant come out of a bar and walk towards a parked vehicle.

“Police turned their vehicle around and followed. She was driving slowly in manner and it was erratic.

“Her vehicle came to a stop and she failed a roadside breath test. She was taken to the police station and a CAMIC procedure was also carried out.”

The court heard Young, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to drink-driving at the first opportunity.

She had planned to plead a special reasons defence in a bid to keep her driving licence at a hearing at a different court, it was said.

But her bid was withdrawn at the last minute when new evidence about her offence came to light.

Chris Wilson, defending, said: “She is of previous good character. There was an incident that led to her driving her car.

“She was stopped by the officers and taken to the station.

“Up to this point she was law abiding. There is nothing there that I would suggest is an issue or a problem.

“There has been a partner who had caused some problems in the past who was in the city centre that evening.

“There had been certain things said and certain threats made.”

Young’s test sample showed 50mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath. The legal limit is 35mcgs.

District Judge Kathryn Meek offered Young the opportunity to reduce her ban by a quarter by sitting a drink-driver rehabilitation programme.

She also fined Young £140 and ordered she pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
