Mayor of Sunderland's son charged with assaulting emergency worker and criminal damage

The adult son of the Mayor of Sunderland is to appear in court, charged with assaulting an emergency worker and criminal damage.

James Snowdon, the son of Coun David Snowdon, is due to appear before South Tyneside Magistrates Court on June 26.

Mr Snowdon, 30, of High Street East, Sunderland, was arrested this morning.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 12.30am on Friday we received a report of criminal damage on Queens Parade, Sunderland.

“It was reported that a man – who was in the company of a group of other people - had punched a car and caused substantial damage.

“Officers attended and arrested a 30-year-old man, who has since been charged with criminal damage and assault of an emergency worker.

“Two women – aged 30 and 23 – were also arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly. They have since both received penalty notices.”

Coun Snowdon declined to comment.
