Manhunt continues after Wearside shopkeeper tackles robber armed with a gun

Police are searching for a man who tried to hold up a grocery shop in Washington.

The attempted robbery, which was foiled by a shopkeeper who wrestled with a man, took place at the Best One shop on Front Street, Concord at around 6pm on Friday, December 27.

It led to officers carrying out a raid at a property in the town on Friday, December 27.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said he had seen a number of armed officers in and around Usworth Station Road, Sulgrave.

The neighbour told the Echo: “We saw a lot of police and multiple armed response officers. They told us to get back in the house. That was it.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At approx. 6pm this evening police received a report of an armed robbery at the Best One shop, Front Street, Concord Washington.

“It is reported that a man entered the shop, threatened the shopkeeper with a firearm and demanded money. The shopkeeper refused and wrestled with the man who then made off empty handed.”

Police have appealed for information on a man described as a white male, 5ft 3ins, skinny build and was wearing black clothing and a black and grey cap.

The spokesperson added: “Inquiries are ongoing and officers are asking anyone with information to come forward by contacting 101 quoting log 895 271219 or calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

The Best One shop is now open for business as normal.
