Man with history of extreme violence against ex jailed after leaving her fearing 'he will, one day, kill me'

John Strother is banned from having contact with his former partner, who he has assaulted in the past, but has "repeatedly" breached the restraining order meant to keep him away from her.

Newcastle Crown Court heard the victim was not at home when the 29-year-old turned up again on September 15 but he asked a neighbour to "tell her I love her, I don't want to cause her anymore trouble".

Despite not being at home, Strother's visit had an affect on the victim, who said in an impact statement: "He is unpredictable and has used extreme violence in the past.

"He seems to have a total disregard for this order.

"He seems to think it is his right to make my life a living hell.

"I believe if I am not protected in some way by the police or the courts he will, one day, kill me."

Strother, of Hindmarch Drive, West Boldon, who has convictions for 47 previous offences, admitted breach of a restraining order.

He also admitted carrying a large screwdriver with him at Clayton Street, Newcastle, in March.

Earlier this year Strother, 28, pleaded guilty to two counts of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour towards two nurses at South Tyneside District Hospital on Saturday, April 11.

Judge Sarah Mallett has sentenced Strother to 28 months behind bars and extended the restraining order to last for life.

The judge said: "He has used extreme violence on her in the past.

"She says he makes her life a living hell and if she is not protected in some way that he will, one day, kill her."

Gavin Doig, defending, said Strother had written a letter to the court and handed in references.

Mr Doig said Strother "didn't stay, he just left" when he found out the victim was not at home during his last visit and did not return.

Mr Doig said Strother has been doing all he can to engage with the authorities who can help him in custody but his opportunities are limited during the current health crisis.
