Man taken to hospital after police use Taser to detain him after 13-hour stand off

Durham Constabulary and other emergency services were called to Thomas Street, a terrace which runs between Holmhill Lane and Crawlaw Road in Easington Colliery, at 9.10pm yesterday, Monday, April 6.

They were alerted to a house in after concerns for the welfare of a man, with a number of police vehicles seen parked up on Holmhill Lane as the incident unfolded, with lengthy negotiations carried out with the resident.

Residents in the area have been thanked for their support as officers spent more than 13-hours to bring the incident to a close earlier today.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Police officers, including specially trained negotiators, attended the scene to communicate with the 32-year-old man.

“However, over the course of the night, the man refused to cooperate or fully engage with officers who became more concerned for his safety.

“Shortly after 11am today, due to increasing concerns over the man’s safety, it was necessary take decisive action.

”During this intervention, it was necessary to deploy a Taser to safely detain him.

“He has since been taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The house at the centre of the call out has since been made secure.

Chief Inspector Steve Ball, from Durham Constabulary, added: “We would like to thank the local community for their patience as we worked throughout the night to bring this incident to a safe conclusion.”
